How to Overcome Spiritual Attacks in Your Marriage

Every married couple experiences disagreements and setbacks in their marriage that may be caused by factors outside of their marriage. It is extremely important for us to recognize that a husband and wife are one-flesh vessels designed to bring glory to God. Therefore, covenant marriages are spiritual vessels that attract deviant spiritual attention, which comes in the form of spiritual attacks that are launched from the devil and his wicked forces.
We must be spiritually aware and take heed to what God says in His Word:
“We’re not waging war against enemies of flesh and blood alone.
No, this fight is against tyrants, against authorities, against supernatural powers and demon princes that slither in the darkness of this world, and against wicked spiritual armies that lurk about in heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12).
It is necessary for us to recognize that often the disturbances and disruptions that seem to come from out of nowhere are planned as surprise attacks to kill, steal, and destroy peace in your marriage. Have you ever experienced situations like the following? If so, they may very well be spiritual attacks from the enemy. These are examples:
☆ Your serene dinner table is suddenly transformed to a battleground by your children fighting and screaming
☆ A fun day spent with your spouse spirals to an unexpected ending involving tears and threats of divorce from some simple disagreement that got out of control
☆ Time spent together is unable to be enjoyed due to you or your spouse suffering sudden onset of a panic attack or anxiety attack that seems to materialize without any trigger or reason.
Recognition of spiritual attacks is not so that you can live a fearful or paranoid existence. With recognition and awareness of the highly spiritual nature of your marriage, your protective instincts can awaken so that you can always be ready to take authority against the wiles of the enemy.
5 Ways to Overcome Spiritual Attacks in Your Marriage :
1) PRAY. You should pray continually before disagreements; but when the surprise attacks occur, you need to be prepared to PRAY–pray silently or pray in tongues–rather than argue or respond with anger or verbal defense against verbal attacks by your spouse The enemy wants to catch you unaware so that you will react impulsively by the flesh and not by the Spirit. Keep praying through the confusion and any discord until the ungodly workings against your marriage are stayed or stopped.
“Pray always. Pray in the Spirit. Pray about everything in every way you know how! And keeping all this in mind, pray on behalf of God’s people. Keep on praying feverishly, and be on the lookout until evil has been stayed” (Ephesians 6:18).
2) FIGHT USING THE WORD OF GOD. Even Jesus when faced with satan in the desert after 40 days with no food in His belly knew that His weapon was not in His arguing or just dealing with the enemy. He didn’t lash out without control. He countered the devil by saying “It is written…”! He countered with God’s Word, and we must do the same when we are facing attacks from the enemy in our circumstances. We cannot fight and battle with our spouses the way the Real Housewives on reality television do with grand, explosive demonstrations of anger and fleshy understanding.
No, we have to understand that there is more that is happening than we can see in the natural realm that cannot be solved the way the world says we should solve them. For every problem or trial that sets itself up against what God says you can have and who He says you are, speak and pray God’s Word. God has the victory! God has the final say!!! Amen!!!
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).
3) BE IMMOVEABLE. STAND! Always be ready in the full armor of God. Be ready to hold your ground and stand firm on God’s Word when the spiritual attacks come. You have to be grounded in truth and righteousness or the enemy’s darts will find a way in to cause damage and destruction. The purpose of the attacks is the enemy’s attempt to get you to move and respond out of anger, fear, and doubt. Stand on God’s Word and trust Him. The attacks are to try to get you to act outside of God’s will in your flesh. When you feel you must make a decision and you haven’t prayed about it and heard from God, it is not the time to act. Just because you and your husband had an argument, don’t go cutting up his clothes and packing your suitcase. Pray. Read God’s Word amd wait on Him.
“And this is why you need to be head-to-toe in the full armor of God: so you can resist during these evil days and be fully prepared to hold your ground. 14 Yes, stand—truth banded around your waist, righteousness as your chest plate,” (Ephesians 6:10,13).
“Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries” (Psalm 112:4-8).
4) ASK THE HOLY SPIRIT TO GUIDE YOU.
Like Paul, we need to be asking God’s Holy Spirit to guide us in everything we do. We want to make sure that everything we do and say will be Holy Spirit-led so that we are able walk by faith righteously. We cannot forget to raise up our faith. Above everything, our faith must be raised up because we have to first believe in God’s power and trust in Him because if we don’t believe in Jesus, how could we speak His Word and take authority in His name? We must ask the Holy Spirit to lead us so we don’t become full of ourselves–thinking we are righteous unto ourselves– and react to spiritual attacks in sinful ways that are about us winning and getting glory rather than glorifying God by responding in a manner that glorifies Him.
” Ask the Spirit to guide me…”  (Ephesians 6:19).
“Don’t forget to raise the shield of faith above all else, so you will be able to extinguish flaming spears hurled at you from the wicked one. 17 Take also the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:16-17).
” And be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—”
5) REMEMBER WHO IS IN CONTROL.
Always remember that JESUS IS LORD! GOD IS ON THE THRONE!!!!! Our marriages are covenants with God and He is in control! We don’t have to fight in our own power. The best way to fight back against attacks on our marriages from the enemy is by Prayer and God’s Word as we trust in God to turn the enemy’s weapons for our good!!!!
” Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6).
” And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28).
Pray Isaiah 54:17 with me (Insert your and your spouse’s names):
” No weapon formed against ____ and _____ shall prosper,
And every tongue which rises against _____ and _____ in judgment
You shall condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
And their righteousness is from Me,”
Says the Lord.” IN JESUS’ NAME, AMEN!
