Resist the Undertow of Temptation

image

But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren.” ~ James 1: 14-15, KJV ~
Stand at the shoreline where the ocean gently laps against the rocks and kisses the sand. Soft waves seem to curl against your toes and beckon you to follow them deeper into the foamy depths. If you’re not paying attention, you will find that you are wading waist-deep and being smacked in the face with cold waves that are no longer playful but that mean business! Temptation is deceptively alluring just like the ocean waves. Many husbands and wives feel the pull of temptation. Whatever or whoever the object or person the temptation embodies, temptation is inviting and distracts a person from what troubles them. Temptation is designed to look, smell, taste, and feel appealing to our fleshy lusts, in any combination. The unsuspecting victim of temptation is fooled because the conditions pleasurable that surround it. Temptation draws a person in in a magnetic manner. One is pulled deeper and deeper until he/ she is so far away from the shore–their common sense–their footing is lost and it becomes uncertain how they can repent or turn back from the powerful currents of sin. Maybe if that person cries out for help, someone will hear them.
Better yet, God will hear their cry! Some people who are drowning in their sin believe that they can manage on their own to escape and, unfortunately, are pulled under by the powerful undertow. Temptation draws out our lust and gives birth to sin. It is designed to kill us and strip us of everything good–everything God has blessed us with. If you find yourself in a situation that seems harmless but beckons you to sin against your spouse, please do not wade into that trap. If you do test the waters of sin, you risk losing not only your secure place in the sand by your spouse’s side, you risk losing your life! Prayer
Father God,
we know that temptation is from the evil one. I pray that you will guard me and my spouse from the ungodly temptations the enemy sets up all around us. Lord, help us to clearly see them for what they are. Don’t allow us to be blinded by our flesh. If any of us finds ourselves being tempted to sin, Lord, make a way out for us so we can flee it! Give us the strength to call out to You for wisdom in all situations when temptation dwells. Give us the strength to turn away from doing what is wicked in Your sight because we know that even if our spouse doesn’t see what we do, You see everything. Lord, help us to have a spirit that listens when You or our spouses warn us that we are being drawn in to sin. Forgive us our sins and dissolve anything that prevents us from sharing our weaknesses with our spouses. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
