What To Pray For for Your Marriage

image

The beginning of wisdom and understanding can be found in a simple prayer. One does not have to attend a workshop or follow a daily regimen of devotionals and readings prescribed by others in order to receive insight into their marriage. These tools are definitely helpful but not necessary 🙂 Some of the best insights we can receive are a result of simply seeking God on our own in our personal prayers. Today, I just want to cover some important areas of marriage we can pray about. By no means am I attempting to tell you what to pray; May God guide you in the specifics that you should pray May this bless you!

~Points to Cover In Praying
      for Your Marriage~
Lord, guide us in:
1. Love~ Ephesians 5, Hebrews 3, Titus 2
That we would learn what it means to love like Christ and see our spouse as You see him/her. That husbands will learn what it means to lay their lives down for their wives as Christ did for His bride–the church. That husbands will learn how to cherish their wives as a part of their own bodies and nurture them with prayer and speak the Word over them. That husbands will protect them by not being harsh, rendering unto them compassion with edifying words as the “weaker vessels” and by spiritually leading as shepherds of their families who look after their walks with God.
That wives will learn what it means to submit and surrender to Your plan that our husbands are our heads just as Christ is the head of His bride–the church. That we wives will subject ourselves to our husbands in all things knowing that is the will of God. That wives will learn how to respect and reverence their husbands and act as their husbands’ helpmeets in the manner that does not blaspheme the Word of God. That we wives will render honor and respect as Sarah bestowed on her husband Abraham as her daughters–submitting without fear of our husbands out of fear of God. That we learn to trust our husbands’ leadership and trust that God covers us as we seek to honor Him by obeying His command to submit as their precious vessels. That we learn to seek God in all things and act as one that we are a living example of the harmonious Trinity relationship You have unto Yourself and the mystery of Christ’s love for the church.

2. Grace~
Lord, that we might abound in grace to one one another as our spouse is our closest brother/sister in Christ and “since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken” as joint heirs with Christ (Hebrews 12:28). Let us remember that in our weaknesses, God’s strength is made perfect; therefore, His “grace is sufficient” for us (2 Corinthians 12:9). Let us not view our spouses’ weaknesses as impossible concerns that are hopeless. Let us extend grace to our spouses and pray that God will magnify Himself–show Himself mighty in using their weaknesses, as well as our own, to reveal His power and love for His covenants as He transforms those weaknesses into strengths reinforced by Him. We thank the Lord for grace which only “came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17); thus we earnestly seek Your help in supplying us with grace each day.

3. Communication~
That we understand how to fully “walk worthy of the calling” in our roles as wives/husbands as we communicate with our spouses “with all lowliness, and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:1-3). That God teaches us how to walk as Christ did– “in love” (Ephesians 5:1-2).

4. Forgiveness~
That we learn to “be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave” us (Ephesians 4:32) because we “must” forgive all offenses (Colossians 3:13). The more forgiveness abounds, the more we are free to love one another.
In considering what Jesus said in Luke 7:40-48: ” 40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

5. Fun and Intimacy~
That we fully enjoy our spouses in ways that honor and please God. May He give creative insight and help us to share in the interests of our spouses in ways that enrich our friendship and intimacy. Let us continue to learn what makes them laugh and smile and share in those moments with them. That we are encouraged to enjoy our spouses with the passionate love recorded in Song of Solomon. “I am my beloved’s , And my beloved is mine.” (Song 6:3)
Ecclesiastes 9:9~ “Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— ”
Proverbs 5:18~ “May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.” May we wives bless our husbands’ “fountains” by happily and enthusiastically engaging them in sex and being lovingly affectionate so that they celebrate us and give thanks for us. Let husbands’ fountains be satisfied by their own wives at home and not by immoral, thirsty seductresses in the street. That our own husbands will be so “intoxicated” with us that when they do leave our presence they will be too satisfied and quenched to be tempted to seek enjoyment elsewhere. Proverbs 5:19~ ” A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.”
6. Faith in God’s Vision~
Lord, that we will seek Thine will and not our own as marriage is Your vision for revealing the mystery of Christ’s relationship with the church so that You are glorified. Let us perform our calling and adhere to God’s vision in faith that His will be done.
“1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” (Romans 12:1-3).
Father, I thank You in advance that every wife and husband who reads this and has faith will kneel in prayer for their marriage, and You will answer each according to Your will and great mercy and compassion for us. In Jesus’ name, thank You. Amen.

May you be blessed!
